Support for Teaching and Learning

Support for teaching and learning at the University of Rochester is rooted in the educational missions of the separate schools and enhanced through institution-wide collaboration. The School of Arts, Sciences & Engineering’s Center for Excellence in Teaching in Learning, the Simon School’s faculty Committee on Teaching & Learning, the School of Medicine & Dentistry’s Office of Faculty Development, are all resources to their schools’ faculty that also offer the chance for faculty university-wide to participate in workshops, seminars and consultation in support of teaching excellence. The Education Leadership cluster of the University’s Committee on Interdisciplinary Studies hosts monthly lunchtime teaching seminars and sponsors an annual teaching innovation workshop, developed by a team of faculty and instructional experts representing each of the University’s six schools.

Support for Research

Research at the University of Rochester is ubiquitous, distinguished by strengths in a number of multidisciplinary fields.  Over fifty centers and institutes complement the work conducted in our academic departments, including diverse programs in biomedical sciences, natural sciences, social sciences and engineering, the arts, and humanities. Discovery reaching across disciplines is supported  through the Provost’s Multidisciplinary Research Awards, granted annually; the Bridging Fellowships, inter-departmental faculty leaves; and by the University Committee on Interdisciplinary Studies, funded faculty clusters facilitating interaction on topics crossing  traditional fields. The University’s Office of Research and Project Administration (ORPA) along with grant-writing experts and administrators in the separate schools support the search for funding. Research is also a vital part of the undergraduate experience, with advising and funding provided by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Mentoring.
