Sugary Drinks a Major Culprit in Childhood Obesity
Empty calories now make up about 40 percent of the energy consumed by children in the United States, according to new research from the Medical Center. A large percentage of those empty calories come from sugar-sweetened drinks, such as fruit juice and soda, which have little to no nutritional value.

AlertUR Test is Thursday
The biannual test of the University’s emergency notification
system, AlertUR, is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 7, at 6:15 p.m. The
system is designed to alert students, faculty, and staff by text
message, e-mail, or other methods during an emergency. This will be the
first test for many faculty and staff who are now covered by AlertUR.
The test will not disrupt scheduled activities. The current emergency
systems within the Medical Center will continue to cover faculty and
staff there. Before the test, check that your contact information is
accurate and complete. Go to www.rochester.edu/alertur and sign in with your NetID and password to verify your best contact information.

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month
October marks the 7th annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security. This year's theme is "Our Shared Responsibility," emphasizing that everyone must do their part to help protect themselves, their neighbors, and the country from cyber threats.

D'Lions Hosting Blood Drive This Week
The D'Lion Organization is sponsoring an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Oct. 6 and 7 from 11 a.m to 5 p.m. in the May Room of Wilson Commons. Your donation can save up to three lives. Donors are welcome to pre-register for an appointment at rochester.givesblood.org. D'Lions will have a table in Wilson Commons from Oct. 3-5 if you would prefer to sign up in person.
