students accept key to city from rochester mayor

YellowJackets Receive Key to Rochester
Rochester Mayor Thomas Richards presents the key to the city to Aaron Sperber and Jamal Moore, who accepted the honor on behalf of the YellowJackets. The a cappella group was recognized Friday afternoon for its contributions to the city, including its recent work with students at Rochester’s World of Inquiry School. University Named Leader in Promoting a Healthy Workplace
The University has been honored by the American Heart Association as a Platinum-Level Start! Fit-Friendly Company for its successful efforts to create a culture of corporate wellness. The University also has been chosen among a select group of companies as an AHA 2011 Worksite Innovation Award winner, a tribute reserved for organizations that lead in the development and implementation of innovative and effective programs to motivate employees toward a healthier lifestyle.

Meeting Highlights Progress in Wilmot Research
Wilmot Cancer Center researchers have a strong showing among the top presenters at this year’s annual meeting for the American Society of Hematology (ASH), December 10 to 13, in San Diego. Several Medical Center faculty members were invited to showcase their work in more than 20 posters, 18 talks, and two education sessions.

Holiday Video Stresses Phishing Protection
Phishing is an email fraud method in which the sender uses legitimate-looking email in an attempt to gather personal and financial information from recipients. Typically, the messages appear to come from well known and trustworthy Web sites. Enjoy University IT’s rendition of “Phishing Bells” to help remind you to be careful when clicking links found within your email. Do you have ideas that should be shared as security tips of the week? Foodlink Collection Bins Set Up Around University
Well-U has teamed up with Foodlink to provide hunger relief in the community. Collection bins are located in several areas at the Medical Center, on the River Campus, and at off-campus locations.  For more information, click here or call 276-4197. Help Well-U beat its goal from last year, which was 425 lbs.

Book Explores Holyistic Medicine
Seymour Schwartz ’57M (Res), Distinguished Alumni Professor of Surgery at the Medical Center, will be signing copies of his latest book, Holystic Medicine: Patron Saints of Medicine, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at Barnes and Noble in Pittsford Plaza. Coauthored with Christopher Hoolihan, head of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division of Edward G. Miner Library, the book provides an account of the different patron saints of medicine with intriguing insights into their backgrounds and the particular diseases or conditions they are associated with and why.

Student Art Show Reception Is Today
An opening reception for the last student art show of the semester is planned from noon to 2 p.m. today in the ASIS Gallery at Sage Art Center on the River Campus. The show includes a wide variety of work, featuring students in Introductory 3D, Introduction to Studio Practice, and Issues in Advanced Drawing.

Student Art Contest Open
University IT is sponsoring an art contest open to all Rochester students. They are asked to create a piece of art that will help promote or explore the importance of information security at the University. The winner will be awarded a $200 gift card to The Art Store in Henrietta. Application instructions are available online. The contest deadline is March 1. Contact Will Graver or call 276-3872 with questions.

Free Lasik Seminar Planned for Wednesday
Learn more about Lasik at a free seminar at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Flaum Eye Institute’s refractive surgery center at Meridian Centre in Brighton. Register online or by calling 273-2020. Refreshments will be provided.

Rochester and Finger Lakes Region Receive $68.8 Million
Projects in Rochester and the Finger Lakes will receive $68.8 million dollars in economic development grants and tax breaks from New York State. The results of the regional competition were announced in Albany Thursday morning. “You can’t look at it in all or nothing terms, that’s wrong,” says University President Joel Seligman, coleader of the Finger Lakes Regional Council. “We walked away with $68.8 million.” Read more... YNN Rochester (Dec. 9)
YellowJackets and ROCapella Teaming Up
Throughout the fall, the the YellowJackets a cappella group has been meeting with students at the World of Inquiry school, introducing them to singing techniques and a cappella arrangements. Now, with the help of the YellowJackets, students at Inquiry have formed their own group, ROCapella, and the two groups are gearing up for a sold-out concert to showcase their hard work.
