University Plays Key Roles in Search for Higgs Boson
July 4, 2012, was a historic day in science with researchers at CERN announcing the discovery of a new particle that is “consistent with the Higgs boson.” It was also a historic day for the University. Not only was a Rochester faculty member an originator of the theory for the Higgs mechanism and the Higgs boson, three Rochester scientists worked on one of the experiments that led to the CERN discovery. Meath Game Benefits Golisano Children's Hospital
The Eddie Meath all-star high school
football game, which benefits Golisano Children’s Hospital, will take
place at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 7, at St. John Fisher College. Tickets
for the game, which brings together Section V’s best players to face

RPO Offers Discounts on Upcoming Concerts
University faculty, staff, and alumni can obtain tickets at a discount price of $10 for a Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra performance of music by Mozart, Grieg, and Tchaikovsky at 7:30 p.m. July 11, in the Performance Hall at Hochstein. They can get 25 percent off tickets to see the RPO perform two of Tchaikovsky’s best-loved works at 8 p.m. July 14, in Kodak Hall. Both performances will be under Music Director Arild Remmereit. Physicists Find Elusive Particle Seen as Key to Universe
Peter Higgs, the University of Edinburgh theorist for whom the boson is named, was one of six physicists, working in three independent groups, who in 1964 invented what came to be known as the Higgs field. Carl Hagen, professor of physics and astronomy, was among them.
