English Professor’s Poem Featured in ‘Motionpoems’
“Snow” a poem by James Longenbach, the Joseph Henry Gilmore Professor of English, has been made into a 2-minute film by Motionpoems. “Snow” was featured in 2011 Best American Poetry, a yearly anthology of contemporary American poetry. Click here to watch the film, which is narrated by Longenbach.

Down with Flu? Scientists Want to Study Your Germs
This marks the fourth year that the Medical Center’s infectious disease researchers are collecting blood samples and throat swabs to learn more about seasonal flu viruses—the amount of virus that resides in the nasal cavity, how long people are contagious, and how the disease spreads throughout households. Wage and Tax Statements Will Be Available Online
Wage and Tax Statements (W-2s) will again be available online through HRMS. Go to Self Service—Payroll and Compensation—W-2/W-2c Consent—and indicate your consent by Jan. 4 to be able to view and print your W-2 online early instead of receiving a mailed form at the end of January. Those who have already elected to give consent will remain active and there’s no need to reactivate your consent. Contact the Payroll Office at 275-2040 or with any questions or concerns.

Roc the Day Includes University, Affiliates
Roc the Day, today’s 24-hour online giving event supporting causes and organizations in the Greater Rochester community, includes the University and several of its divisions, programs, and affiliates. Learn more at

Registration Open for Simon Executive Experience
See what the Simon Executive MBA program offers at the next Simon School Executive Experience on Saturday, Jan. 5. The program begins at 8 a.m. with a welcome breakfast. Click here to register or for more information. Attendees can attend a class, learn more about the program, and share a lunch with students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

Lasik Seminar Tonight

Newsmaker Q&A: David Higgs
Brighton resident David Higgs got an early start on his career as a church organist when he was 10 years old, and he hasn’t slowed down since. He was director of music and an organist at Park Avenue Christian Church and associate organist of the Riverside Church, where he also conducted the Riverside Choral Society. He has also served on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music and is now chair of the organ department at the Eastman School.

UR Selects Its New General Counsel
The University has named a new vice president and general counsel after a national search to replace the retiring Sue Stewart. Gail Norris, who has served at the University as senior legal counsel for all aspects of operations, will take over the position beginning Jan. 1. In her work with the University, Norris has managed complex legal matters related to research, technology transfer and licensing, University officials said.
