Vivian Lewis to Lead University’s Diversity Efforts
Beginning Oct. 1 and for the balance of the academic year, Vivian Lewis will serve as acting deputy to the president and acting vice provost for faculty development and diversity. Lynne Davidson will step down from the post Oct. 1. President Seligman thanked Davidson for the “magnificent job” she has done, saying “she has been pivotal in chairing our 2006 Task Force on Faculty Diversity and Inclusiveness and in implementing its 31 recommendations. I look forward to Vivian’s contributions to further strengthen diversity initiatives at the University.”

Astrophysicists Closer to Understanding Stellar Jets
The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded Adam Frank, professor of physics and astronomy, and his team $2.8 million to replicate the physics of a stellar jet in a laboratory.

Reminder: Rochester Scholars Proposals Due Oct. 2
Faculty, graduate students, and staff are invited to submit proposals for Rochester Scholars, the University’s pre-college academic program for middle and high school students for the upcoming winter, spring, and summer 2010 sessions. Courses run for one- or two-week sessions during Monroe County school breaks and summer vacation. For more information, call Kati Goodberlet at 275-3221 or e-mail precollege@rochester.edu.

Talk Will Focus on ‘Race and Affirmative Opportunity in the Barack Obama Era’
William Julius Wilson, the Lewis P. and Linda L. Geyser University Professor at Harvard University, will give a talk on “Race and Affirmative Opportunity in the Barack Obama Era’ at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at the Interfaith Chapel Sanctuary. Wilson’s keynote address will introduce a day of workshops on race and ethnicity in faculty recruitment and retention.

Visiting Nurse Service Holds Wound Care Symposium
The Visiting Nurse Service/Medical Center seventh annual Wound Care Symposium will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday Oct. 8, in the Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building. Harrison Howe Award Presentation is Thursday
The American Chemical Society Rochester Section's Harrison Howe Award presentation and lectures will take place Oct. 1 at the Medical Center. The events are free, but registration is required for the evening program.
