Images of Female Smokers in Cigarette Advertising
By Liz F. Kay

Images of smoking in cigarette advertising place the activity in a social and cultural context by assigning meaning. Often, stereotypically male characteristics such as independence, adventure and excitement are associated to smoking through these images. These ideals have become a part of female ambition as well. As a result, not only do advertisements directed toward women utilize these emotional appeals, but also advertising that primarily uses male subjects can be used to attract female consumers as well.
