DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY at the UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER

  How to Declare your Major

Students can declare a major at almost any time during their university career; in most cases this is done in the second semester of the sophomore year. To formally declare one of the UPBM concentrations, students report to different individuals depending on the UPBM Track they have chosen: for Biochemistry, contact Dr. Elizabeth Grayhack for an appointment; for Microbiology, contact Dr. Robert Marquis for an appointment; for Neuroscience, go to the Neuroscience office, Meliora 102; for Cell and Developmental Biology, Evolutionary Biology and Ecology, Molecular Genetics or the B.A. in Biology, students must first make an appointment with Marianne Arcoraci in the Biology Department Office, Hutchison Hall 402 to fill in preliminary paperwork and be assigned an advisor. It is helpful if students get an official blue concentration form (available in the Center for Academic Support, 312 Lattimore Hall) before seeing these individuals.

Once a student officially has declared a major, it is recommended that he/she periodically visit with his/her advisor. This is particularly important if ther e are any changes from the curriculum proposed on the concentration form. Formal submission of another form is NOT required but the changes should be made in writing and made part of the student's record in the track office.
