*Note to students with Advanced Placement (AP) Biology or International Bacalaureate (IB) Biology credits
AP and IB Biology Credit Policies for Incoming Students Effective Fall 2005
AP Biology Credit Policy: Students who scored a '4' or '5' on Advanced Placement Biology exams received four (4) general college credits; however, it cannot be used to satisfy any of the requirements for a biology major or minor.
IB Biology Credit Policy: Students who scored a '6' or '7' on the International Bacalaureate exam received 4 general college credits; however, it cannot be used to satisfy any of the requirements for a biology major or minor.
AP and IB Students Eligible to take Concentrated Introductory Course Series: students who took AP Biology and received a '4' or '5' on their exam as well as students who took IB Biology and received a '6' or '7' on their exam are elgible to take a more concentrated introductory course series designed for students with biological experience: BIO 112/113 Perspectives in Biology I & II.
Student with AP or IB credit who intend to major within the biological sciences should take one of two introductory course series: BIO 110/111 Principles of Biology I & II or BIO 112/113 Perspectives in Biology I & II before registering for sophomore-level biology courses, e.g., BIO 198 Principles of Genetics or BIO 190 The Human Genome, and BIO 250 Introduction to Biochemistry. Combined, both introductory course-series are two semesters long ( 1 year) and may be taken out of sequence.
Note: The Biology department does not approve AP or IB Biology credit for use towards majors (biology and non-biology related). Students who do not plan to major within the Biological sciences should contact the department of their intended major for approval to use Biology AP credit towards their prospective concentrations.
