Major Requirements

Introductory Courses: 3 Courses, 12 Credits

Laboratory Experience: 2-3 Courses, 5-9 Credits

Advanced Courses: 5 Courses, 20 Credits

Diversification Elective: 1 Course, 4 Credits

Ancillary Requirements: 9 Courses, 36 Credits with Indicated Labs

Upper-Level Writing (ULW) Requirements (2 Courses)

All biology majors must complete two upper-level writing (ULW) courses. Although students are strongly encouraged to complete both ULW requirements by taking biological science courses (BIO, BCH, MBI, NSC) an upper-level writing course within a natural science discipline may also be used to meet one of the requirements; i.e.: CHM 210w. Writing courses within the humanities and social sciences may not be applied to biology major. See Upper-Level Writing Requirement for more information on which courses satisfy this requirement.

Exception to Major Requirements

What is a petition? A petition is a written request to the UPBM Committee of Track Coordinators for a variance of the extant rules/regulations. This may be, for example, a request for substitution or acceptance of a course that is not ordinarily part of the UPBM curriculum.

Students with requests for exceptions to the requirements are required to consult with their academic advisor. For some exceptions, it may be necessary to submit a petition to the UPBM Committee.

General Major Requirements

The Undergraduate Program in Biology and Medicine (UPBM) requires students to maintain a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) in the major, excluding allied field courses. Be sure to visit the general degree requirements for more information on double majors, double degrees, and honors in research.
