Minoring in English

inors are offered in English Literature, in Writing (with two separate tracks: Creative Writing or Journalism), and in Theater. The minors in writing and theater emphasize the practical aspects of the discipline and are open to English majors as well as nonmajors. All four minors stipulate a minimum of six courses, five of which must be taken in residence. No more than two courses in one's major may be counted toward the minor. Students wishing to minor in English should contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies in English.

Please note: The English Department's course numbering system has changed as of the Fall 2003 semester. The following includes both the old and new course numbers, with the old number in ( ).

 

Six courses, divided up among the following requirements:

  1. English 113 (150) Survey of British Literature I
  2. Either English 114 (151) Survey of British Literature II or 115 (155) Survey of American Literature
  3. Four additional courses in British or American literature, three of which must be at the 200 or 300 level.

Requirements for a Minor in Writing (Creative Writing, Journalism)

Creative Writing:

Six courses are required for the minor:

  1. Two creative writing courses at the introductory level:
  1. English 120 (111) Introduction to Creative Writing
    English 121 (117) Creative Writing: Fiction
    English 122 (116) Creative Writing: Poetry
    English 123 (118) Playwriting
    English 125 (119) Speculative Fiction

  2. At least one advanced creative writing course:
    English 275 (361) Advanced Fiction
    English 276 (360) Advanced Poetry
    English 277 (363) Screenwriting Workshop
    English 376 (368) Seminar in Poetry Writing
    English 375 (369) Seminar in Fiction Writing
  3. Rhetoric and Style - see Creative Writing Advisor or Director of Undergraduate Studies for appropriate courses.
  4. Additional courses, as needed, to be chosen from the department's offerings in writing, or from 200/300 level literature courses within the College; for instance, courses in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures or in the department of Religion and Classics may help you round out your creative writing minor.

Journalism:

Six courses are required:

  1. English 131 (113) Reporting and Writing the News
  2. English 132 (114) Journalism Workshop
  3. At least one of the following courses:
    English 130 (112) Seminar in Writing
    English 121 (117) Creative Writing: Fiction
    English 122 (116) Creative Writing: Poetry
    English 375 Rhetoric and Style
  4. At least two of the following courses:
    English 133 (115) Editing Practicum
    English 392 Research Project in Journalism
    English 394 Internship
  5. Appropriate additional courses, if needed, to be chosen from the 200/300-level courses in literature or criticism.

Requirements for a Minor in Theater

The Minor in Theatre consists of a minimum of 24 credits taken from the following three categories. No more than two courses included in one's Major may be counted toward the Minor.

A student must work on at least two, but no more than three, productions, acquiring at least eight credits in Production and Performance Courses (either onstage or backstage):

English 290/291: Plays in Production—4 credits
English 292/293/294/295: Plays in Performance—4 credits
Theatre Method and Performance Courses; eight credits in all (Spring course numbers in parentheses):
English 123: Playwrighting—2 credits
English 170 (171)/270 (271): Technical (and Advanced Technical) Theatre—4 credits
English 172: Intro to Stage Lighting and Sound—4 credits
English 174 (175): Acting Techniques—4 credits
English 176 (177): Voice and Movement for the Actor—4 credits
English 180: Directing—4 credits
English 252: Theatre in England—4 credits
English 360 Special Projects: Theatre—4 credits
Dramatic Literature--eight credits (at least two courses):
English 111: Introduction to Shakespeare, or
English 203: Medieval Drama
English 208: Renaissance Drama, Elizabethan and Jacobean Drama
English 209: Problems in Shakespeare, or
English 210: Shakespeare
English 214: Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Drama
English 228: African American Drama
English 235: Modern Drama
English 243: Major Author--a playwright
Additionally, students taking an Internship in Theatre (ENG 398), undertaking an Independent Study (ENG 391) whose subject is Theatre or Dramatic Research, or enrolled in a standard Research Course or Honors Thesis with a Dramatic Literature/Theatrical focus might also have those classes count towards a Minor in Theatre. Similarly, Study Abroad options in London and Bath (if allied to dramatic or theatrical work) might count towards a Minor. Other courses relating to drama and/or theatre, in the English Department may, from time to time, be valid additions to this list, too. See the Director of Undergraduate Studies for details.

In cases where some courses are unavailable, students should consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies for possible substitutions.
