Film and Media Studies

Graduate Program

Our courses are exclusively dedicated to the study of media and film history and theory. There is no course of study in film and video production or screen writing.

At present there is no graduate program in Film and Media Studies. Nonetheless, there are two avenues for acquiring an advanced degree in this field: one in the English Department; one in the Program in Visual and Cultural Studies. The Film and Media Studies Graduate Council brings students from the two departments together. You must write directly to these departments for more information and for applications for graduate study.

Areas of specialization among current faculty and graduate students include: film and media history; film and media theory; genre theory; early cinemas, national cinema traditions [including U.S., Latin American, Spanish, French, German, Italian, British, Japanese, Central and Eastern European]; digital culture and new media; globalization and transnational media; cultural studies; theories of visual and popular culture; gender studies; feminist theory; queer theory; critical race theory. There is usually at least one graduate seminar in film or media studies offered each year. In addition, many of the more advanced undergraduate classes may be taken for graduate credit. These classes are listed with a "400-level" number. For more information, visit the Film and Media Studies Course Descriptions.

Many graduate students also intern for course credit at the George Eastman House or work as volunteer docents. The University and the George Eastman House also appoint a George Eastman Fellow every two years. This fellowship is awarded competitively to advanced graduate students and currently carries a stipend. The George Eastman Fellow works as Assistant Programmer in the Motion Picture Department and assists in the public programs of the Dryden and Curtis Theatres.
