Film and Media Studies

The Study Center

The newly refurbished Film and Media Studies Center consists of a reception area (office of the FMS Administrative Assistant) and the office of the Director of Film and Media Studies, two small seminar rooms (one containing an in-house reference library), and the main communal room, RRLIB 428. This space is used for teaching as well as informal student gatherings and faculty meetings, and provides a common meeting ground for the FMS Undergraduate Council. Another small constellation of rooms serve as storage and individual screening space, with one room reserved for the FMS Special Collection database. FMS also administers a classroom currently “on loan” to student-run URTV.

No equipment other than viewing equipment is housed in FMS. All production equipment is currently housed in the Sage Art Center, where such courses are taught through collaboration with Studio Art (Art and Art History Department). Production facilities are reserved for students enrolled in production classes.

The Center maintains a complete catalogue of the FMS collection, which is housed in the Multimedia Center, Rush Rhees Library G122. The growing collection consists of approximately 14,000 titles available on videotape, DVD or laser disk. The collection also includes over 1000 titles on 16mm and 35mm. A complete catalogue of the holdings is available for consultation only in person at the Center. The FMS Special Collection is available in the Multimedia Center to faculty and students across the University, although items are intended for educational use and are non-circulating for the general undergraduate community. Graduate students may borrow from the Collection after filling out a simple form at the Multimedia Center desk.
