Financial Aid
All admitted doctoral students receive full tuition scholarships for four years covering the annual cost of graduate study. In addition, doctoral students generally receive fellowship stipends of $16,000 per year. An application for admission automatically makes the candidate eligible for a University-wide fellowship, the Sproull Fellowship, and a College-wide Dean's Fellowship. Students may also participate in the College Writing Program during their third and fourth years. In this Program, students design and run their own courses for a supplementary stipend and become eligible for competition to teach such courses in the fifth and sixth year for additional compensation. The University offers a fifth year research fellowship, the Ball Fellowship, on a competitive basis. In addition, other colleges and universities in the Rochester area that regularly employ advanced History students include SUNY Brockport, SUNY Geneseo, Hobart and William Smith College, Monroe Community College, Nazareth College, Rochester Institute of Technology, and St. John Fisher College. We urge all applicants who are American citizens to explore grants from their state governments and national fellowship programs, and all foreign nationals to obtain living and transportation allowances from their own governments.
Unfortunately, the Department cannot offer financial support beyond a half-tuition scholarship to M.A. students.
