Week 1
Thursday, September 2: Introductory comments.  The relation between the usual beam bending analysis and the same problem in linear elasticity.  (See the worksheet [pdf] for a précis of the analysis.)

Week 2
Labor Day Break: Monday, September 6
Tuesday, September 7: Derivation of the beam equations from linear elasticity (See the worksheet [pdf] for a précis of the analysis.)
Thursday, September 9: Derivation of the plate equations.

Week 3
Tuesday, September 14. Summary of the plate equations and edge boundary conditions.  One dimensional plate deformation.  Timoshenko's analysis.
Thursday, September 16.  Very thin plates vs moderately thin plates -- when you use the biharmonic equation.  Edge moment loading. Edge moments from the biharmonic equation.

Week 4: Plate deformations: Gould chapter 10 and Timoshenko selections from chapters 4-6.
Tuesday, September 21: Eigenfunctions.  (Take a look at Appendix V from Chandrasekhar for an example of one-d eigenfunctions.  The cylindrical ones will be useful next week.  You may also want to look at Gibbs' phenomenon.)  Simply-supported rectangular plates.  (See calculational paradigm, a set of different loading conditions, and an assessment of truncation error for a point load.)
Thursday, September 23: Lévy-Nadai techniques, uniformly loaded plates, a specific engineering example
