DAAD Young Ambassador Program

Andrew Green has been selected to serve as a Young Ambassador for study in Germany for the 2007/08 academic year. Congratulations on being chosen for this competitive position.

The purpose of the program is to give students, a recent or soon to be returnee from Germany, a chance to connect with their fellow students, share with them the wonderful time they've had abroad, and encourage them to take advantage of similar opportunities themselves. The folks at DAAD are very happy and thankful that Andrew Green's experiences in Germany has inspired him to dedicate his time and energy toward spreading the word about study in Germany and fostering among his fellow students a deeper understanding of the country and its people.

University of Rochester Graduate Student Earns Fulbright Scholarship

University of Rochester graduate student and alumna Jill Thorson has been named a 2007-2008 Fulbright Scholar to Spain.

Thorson will spend the academic year, which runs from October 2007 to June 2008, at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona where she will conduct research on Spanish and Catalan intonation. Upon completion of the program, Thorson intends to return to the United States and pursue a doctorate in linguistics.

Thorson, of Croydon, N.H., is pursuing her master's degree in linguistics under the supervision of Joyce McDonough, professor and chair of the Department of Linguistics. Thorson graduated in 2005 with a bachelors of arts degree in Spanish and linguistics from the College of Arts, Science, and Engineering. As an undergraduate, Thorson studied abroad in Salamanca, Spain, and Oaxaca, Mexico. She also served as a member of the Equestrian Club, Intercollegiate Horse Show Team, and Phi Betta Kappa. Thorson is the first graduate student in five years to win a Fulbright.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and designed to promote mutual understanding and peace between the United States and other nations through educational and cultural exchange, the Fulbright Program offers opportunities for career-launching study, teaching, and research abroad. Scholars design their own programs and arrange institutional affiliations in the host countries. The grants cover expenses such as travel and health insurance and also provide a monthly stipend.

Jill is UR's first graduate student to win a Fulbright in five years. Please join me in congratulating Jill Thorson on being named a Fulbright Scholar and share widely the news of her success.

Applicants propose self-designed programs of advanced study and/or research, or apply to be English Teaching Assistants in over 140 participating countries. Nearly 1,000 Fulbright grants are awarded each year. The campus application process for the 2005-06 Fulbright competition cycle is now open. Current juniors, seniors, and graduate students should be encouraged to apply. More information can be found on the UR fellowships website.
