Paul Joseph Burgett earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at the Eastman
School of Music of the University of Rochester. His Ph.D. dissertation treated
the aesthetics of the music of Black Americans, a subject that continues
to occupy him as a teacher and scholar.
He currently serves as Vice President and General Secretary and Senior Advisor
to the President at the University of Rochester. In that capacity, he has key
responsibilities for the business of the Board of Trustees, advising the President
and representing his Office among internal constituencies as well as alumni,
civic, and local community constituencies. He is the principal interface between
the president and students of schools across the University. As adjunct professor
of music, he teaches every year, is an undergraduate faculty advisor, and continues
to advise several student organizations.
Earlier professional appointments include: Vice President and University Dean
of Students, University of Rochester; Dean of Students, Eastman School of Music;
Assistant Professor of Music at Nazareth College of Rochester; Executive Director,
Hochstein Memorial Music School; music teacher in the Greece Central School District.
He is a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Strong Museum, is a trustee
of the Genesee Country Village and Museum, the Hillside Family of Agencies, and
Chairman of the National Advisory Board of the Center for Black Music Research
at Columbia College Chicago.
