One and a half years after the European debt crisis unfolded there is little progress in solving it. Unless the fundamentals of the Eurozone are addressed, economists predict a prolonged period of sluggish growth and social tensions in many member states. Some commentators do not rule out a break-up of the Eurozone. The challenges ahead are amplified by the simultaneous increase in expected lifespan and in the average age of the population. An age of diminishing expectations is looming.
