PhD, Michigan, 1967. Voting behavior, legislative term limits, civic education. Current research includes projects on college student voting, state legislative elections, and voting machines and ballot design. Co-editor of the widely known compilation Vital Statistics on American Politics, 2007-2008 (CQ Press, 2007) and co-editor of a comparative volume on voting and elections, Comparing Democracies 2 (Sage, 2002), to be updated over the next year. Co-author of a new work on usability aspects of voting machines and ballot design, Voting Technology: The Not-So-Simple Act of Casting a Ballot (Brookings, 2007). Co-editor of Institutional Change in American Politics: The Case of Term Limits (University of Michigan Press, 2007), the product of a nationwide, joint project of legislative term limits. Teaches courses in the field of American politics and on writing.
