BEC Workshop: Jan 6-8, 2000
On January 6-8, the Rochester Theory Center will be hosting a workshop on campus, jointly sponsored with the Harvard-Smithsonian Institute for Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Physics (ITAMP). The topic will be Multi-Component and Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates of Trapped Dilute Vapors. Professor Nicholas Bigelow is Director of the Workshop and Eddy Timmermans of the Los Alamos National Laboratory is co-Director. Spinor and multi-component alkali vapor BEC's have opened the door for new investigations of degenerate atomic vapors with complex structures and/or internal degrees of freedom. Approximately 20 atomic and condensed matter physicists working on condensate related problems have been invited to speak at the Workshop to share their research and identify directions for future studies. Participants in the Workshop include Brett Esry (Kansas State University), Chris Greene (JILA), Daniel Heinzen (University of Texas), Jason Ho (Ohio State), Juha Javanainen (University of Connecticut), Wolfgang Ketterle (M.I.T.) and members of his group including a former U of R undergrad, Ananth Chikkatur, Anthony Leggett (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), Ian McAlexander (Rice), Pierre Meystre (University of Arizona), Gora Shlyapnikov (AMOLF, Netherlands), and Amichay Vardi (ITAMP).
The number of participants will be limited in order to include researchers actively working on condensate problems most closely related to the Workshop theme, and in order to ensure that the Workshop will provide a dynamic and highly interactive environment.
