Grants, Fellowships, and Awards for Graduate Students
The Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women's Studies offers grants to support research in gender and women's studies by undergraduate and graduate students. The Grants Committee's policy traditionally has been to award money to as many eligible applicants as possible. Typical grant amounts range from $100 – $1000 however we will consider larger requests. Proposals may be for such items as publication subventions, research materials, travel for research, and travel to professional conferences in cases where the applicant is on the program; research grant funding may not be used to pay for participant incentives. Grant recipients are encouraged to present their material in SBAI seminars and conferences. We ask that you acknowledge the support in publications.
When completing your grant application, we encourage you to have the following in mind:
- People from a variety of disciplines are on the Research Grants Committee. Please make clear how your subject matter is centrally related to gender and/or women's studies in a way that is comprehensible to people far outside your field.
- It is incumbent upon you to create a case for relevance and to convey precisely how your research contributes to the field. We will only support work that advances an understanding of gender and/or women's studies.
- Research on female subjects does not automatically qualify.
- Graduate and undergraduate students MUST obtain a letter of recommendation from a supporting faculty member who knows their work.
- Receipts and expenses MUST be presented for reimbursement within 45 days of travel or purchase. This allows us two weeks for adequate processing time. Expenses presented after 60 days will NOT be reimbursable as per the University's policy in accordance with IRS reporting guidelines.
To apply for a Research Grant, please complete the application form online. You can access the Research Grant Application form here on our site. Your application must include a reference letter from a faculty member. Please have your reference email the letter to email@example.com by the due date.
Applications are due in October, February and April of each year. Refer to the events calendar for exact dates. Research grants may be either for research undertaken this academic year or for research planned for the following summer. Receipts should be submitted as soon as possible but no later than one month after expenses occur.
Susan B. Anthony Teaching Fellowship
The Curriculum Committee is pleased to offer a competition each year among currently enrolled graduate students at the University of Rochester for the Susan B. Anthony Teaching Fellowship. The competition asks for proposals to design and teach Women's Studies 100, Introduction to Women's Studies, a 2-credit course. Please note: the current year's competition is for the following academic year.
This Teaching Fellowship will offer an award of $2,500 for an individual graduate student. We hope that students will use their imagination in developing different approaches to the challenge of introducing women's studies and gender & women's issues to undergraduate students. We especially encourage students to apply who have passed their qualifying exams or will shortly do so.
Graduate students should submit:
- A proposed syllabus for an introductory 2-credit course which explores the field of Women's Studies. We are looking for course proposals that use a relatively narrow topical focus to expose students to a variety of perspectives and disciplines in Women's Studies. Successful courses typically reflect the research interest of the applicant. Please indicate not only the readings but also the type of assignments and requirements you would establish. This is an introductory course, therefore the syllabus should be organized for the 100 level. We would also like to see your idea for a full title, i.e.: Introduction to Women's Studies: Women and the Beauty Myth.
- A statement about how you envision teaching the course, what purposes you see the course fulfilling, and how you think this course could serve the Women's Studies major and the broader needs of other undergraduate students. If you have relevant teaching experience, please mention that as well.
- A letter of recommendation from the faculty member who can best attest to your teaching qualifications and potential.
- A curriculum vitae with teaching experience clearly identified.

You may resubmit proposals from last year, especially if you consult with the committee first. There are samples of previous WST 100 syllabi can be requested from the SBAI office by emailing email@example.com. Applicants who are short-listed will be interviewed by members of the curriculum committee.
Susan B. Anthony Dissertation Award
The Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women's Studies is pleased to announce the Susan B. Anthony Dissertation Award. This Award is made to the University of Rochester PhD candidate having completed (or nearly completed) the most distinguished dissertation in women's and/or gender studies. The Dissertation Award amount is $1,000 and was awarded for the first time in Spring 2005.
Nominations and/or applications for the award should be sent to the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women's Studies, Lattimore Hall 538, RC Box 270434, attention Steering Committee, each April.
Graduate Students must submit the following documents:
- a completed Dissertation Award Application Form. Download the Dissertation Award Application Form (PDF) here or obtain one at the Institute;
- the candidate's most recent vita;
- two letters of recommendation. (In the case of a nearly completed dissertation, the PhD candidate's advisor must attest to prospect of the dissertation's imminent completion);
- a 3-page abstract and table of contents of the dissertation;
- available chapters of the dissertation.
