Resources for Advisors

There are thousands of study abroad programs available throughout the world, focusing on many different topics. Assisting a student in planning overseas studies means finding a program which matches his or her goals and interests. The Center for Study Abroad has information about many programs, including reference books and web sites that list study abroad programs available in each country. For example, Academic Year Abroad, published by the Institute of International Education, lists thousands of opportunities world-wide.

As you distinguish the programs according to the models described previously, keep in mind the programs with which the University of Rochester has an established relationship.

A University of Rochester-sponsored program is one with which the University has a formal affiliation. The programs have been reviewed by the Faculty Committee on Study Abroad and are deemed to be of excellent academic quality. In most cases, these programs have hosted UR students for many years, and the program staff have become familiar with the academic interests, needs and strengths of UR students. UR offers more than 70 programs during the summer and the academic year.

Non-UR Programs

UR students are permitted to go on study abroad programs offered by other U.S. universities or institutions, but need to do a little more legwork themselves, particularly in terms of transfer credit and finances. There are more than 4,000 of these programs world-wide.

The Institute of International Education publishes complete guides to all programs sponsored by American colleges and universities (see “Information Resources for Study Abroad”). Print copies may be found in Lattimore 206. Programs are arranged by country and city, and entries include information on fields of study, housing, costs, and contacts for further information and applications. Entries are concise, and it is easy to determine if the program has the features you are looking for. In addition, you may find copies of brochures and catalogues for some non-UR programs in the Center for Study Abroad.

How can you tell the difference between a UR-sponsored and a non-UR program? It’s easy. All UR programs have detailed descriptions on the UR study abroad web site and in our handbook UR There: A Guide to Study Abroad.

UR-Sponsored Programs

The University of Rochester sponsors semester and/or year programs in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Chile, China, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Ghana, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, and Taiwan. These programs are either exchanges, housed at overseas universities, island programs, or sponsored by consortia to which UR belongs:

  • Internships in Europe
  • Advanced Studies in England
  • IES: The Institute for the International Education of Students
  • American University in Cairo, Egypt
  • Ben-Gurion University, Israel
  • Jagiellonian University, Poland
  • Council on International Educational Exchange (selected sites)
  • ORT Braude College, Israel
  • Hebrew University, Israel
  • Uppsala University, Sweden
  • University of Sussex, England
  • Meiji Gakuin University, Japan

Advantages of UR-Sponsored Programs

  • If you receive University of Rochester financial aid, you will be able to apply it toward the cost of your program (see “Financial Aid”).
  • Your grades from a UR-sponsored program will be shown on your transcript, although they will not be calculated into your GPA.
  • Grades for courses taught by University of Rochester faculty appear on the transcript and are calculated into the GPA. This includes grades from faculty-led programs and the internship portion of the Internships in Europe Program.
  • Applications are available at the Center for Study Abroad, and all materials are processed by that office.
  • Elective transfer credit is automatic upon completion of coursework with a C or better (following normal College transfer credit guidelines).
  • You are eligible for special scholarships through some of our affiliates such as IES and CIEE.
