Summer programs
If you are thinking about studying abroad, but are not quite sure if you would like to spend a full semester abroad, a summer program is a great way to test study abroad. Likewise, summer programs are a good option if you are not able to fit semester or academic year study abroad into your program. You may participate in a summer program as early as the summer following your freshman year.
Programs of varying duration and destination abound, so there is something for everybody. The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures sponsors summer language programs in Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, and Russia. Information is available at www.rochester.edu/college/mlc. The Internships in Europe program offers summer internships in Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The department of Religion & Classics sponsors an archaeological dig in Italy and a literature program in Egypt, and ASL offers a French Sign Language program in Paris and Rennes, France. See the UR-sponsored programs section in this Guide for descriptions of these programs. To research programs sponsored by other colleges and universities, visit the Study Abroad Resource Library in Lattimore 206, and read the Institute for International Education publication entitled Short Term Study Abroad. Application deadlines for summer programs vary, but typically they are in February or March.
Financial aid is quite limited for summer programs. Normal university scholarships and grants are not available. However, the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures offers the Burton Fellowship, which is for students pursuing summer language study overseas. Also, the Boren Scholarship, a federally funded program, is available for U.S. citizens who wish to study in certain non-western countries. In addition, some study abroad programs offer their own scholarships.

Financial aid is quite limited for summer programs. Normal university scholarships and grants are not available. However, if you receive Federal aid and will earn at least six academic credits on a summer program, you may be able to use this aid toward the cost of the program. Check with the Financial Aid Office. Also, some study abroad programs offer scholarships. For example, the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures offers the Burton Fellowship, which is for students pursuing summer language study overseas, and the Skalny center for Polish and Central European Studies offers scholarships for students interested in the summer program in Krakow.
