DAN 101 World Dance: Movement as Culture
4.0 Credits
Instructor: Holland, A.
This lecture-based course is an exploration of world cultures through dance. Students will expand their dance literacy through movement and embodied dance history. The course will therefore investigate the historical and anthropological significance of dance as well as provide an experience of the movement qualities of different world cultures. In this connection, students will examine dance as a kaleidoscopic reflection of humanity's basic instinct to communicate and, by extension, as an expression of world perspectives through movement. Specific attention to the cultures and dances of Japan, Nepal, India, Africa, North and South America and Europe will be investigated. The course will include movement classes, lectures, films, readings, discussions, guest artists, journal writing and a final project.
