Many of us experience dance as a form of socializing ora form
ofartistic expression. Sacred Dance takes yet another perspective.
Sacred Dance is a way of communing with our innermost self as well as a
way of celebrating the feminine principle, the rhythms of nature, of
the seasons, of our lives. Sacred Dance is both ancient and current. In
this class we will explore the many expressionsof sacred dance and
meditative movement chosen from dances danced the world over. Included
in the warm-up will be hatha yoga with its similar emphasis on union of
body, mind and heart. Examples of dances explored will be East Indian
and Egyptian folk dances, ancient hula, African healing dance and
improvisation. Also included in theclass will be time for centering
exercises, contemplation and discussion. Class requirements include
journaling, one 3-5 page paper and a presentation.
