DAN 213 Jazz Dance
2.0 Credits
This course will introduce students at various levels to vernacular jazz movement as it relates to jazz music and its historical context. Stylistically eclectic courses will blend the challenges of full-bodied, momentum-driven dancing with subtlety and a sense of one’s own self. Emphasis will be on the development of basic skills, energy, strength, control, continuity, and rhythmic and bodily awareness. Attention will be given to sharpening the student’s awareness of cultural and historical context, rhythmic and musical time, directions and pathways of energy and to disciplining the body to move with clarity, and in accordance with sound anatomical principles. Attention to detail, focus, dynamics and accent, as well as the student’s ability to make sense of the movement within their own bodies will be addressed.
