DAN 275 Dance Improvisation and Composition

2.0 Credits
Instructor: Smith, M.

In this course, we will experiment with various improvisational tools and structures as well as methods of dance-making.  Students will be encouraged to explore movement expression curiously and playfully and later will see how compositional craft affects the quality and content of a dance.  Drawing from dance, visual art, theater, music, writings and other sources, we will explore diverse approaches to creativity, experimentation and choreography.  Various in-class workshop and showings, followed by group discussions, will facilitate the process of generating movement material, investigating its possibilities, supporting each other in clarifying intentions and gaining confidence within a safe, while challenging environment.  While masterpieces are not necessary at all times, commitment to and interest in what one is investigating is required.
