DAN 281
Dance, Culture, & Ethnicity
Credit—2 hours

Instructor:
Martino, K.

Political boundaries may have divided ethic families, but the people remain unified by their cultural heritage. Each ethnic group has its
own repertoire of dance and drum songs. In this class, dances will be practiced and identified with their particular ethnic context. The cultural practices of Dance and Drum are performed with specific purpose. Using video, readings, and music listening, students will examine the function of dance and drum in society, ritual practices,
how gender affects participation, and the connection between the dance, the drum, and the spirit. The final project will be a class rite of
passage that will be inspired by the class participants. Using the tools of guided visualization, journaling, and improvisation, students will identify personal motivations for initiation and contribute to the final ritual dance. Previous experience in West African dance or drum is helpful but not necessary.
