Flamenco Dream

A Lecture / Demonstration
Meliora Weekend
Saturday, October 9 ~ 1:45-2:45 pm

Presented as a succession of dreams, “Soñando Flamenco” (Flamenco Dream) delves into the struggles and triumphs of a young woman entering the artistic world and culture of Flamenco. Implementing a wide stylistic variety of Flamenco music and dance, “Soñando Flamenco” presents a dynamic and accessible view into the world of Flamenco, from its most time-honored traditions, to its more modern creations. Conceived and produced by University of Rochester alumna, Rebecca L. Thomas, Soñando Flamenco is performed by Flamenco Troupe “La Yedra,” a group of six artists, which includes Song, Dance, Guitar, and Percussion. As is typical at the end of Flamenco performances, La Yedra will come together in the traditional format of El Cuadro, or small Flamenco ensemble, in their Fin de Fiesta, or Party-Cap, in which everyone gets a turn to show-case their moves.

Students Only: $5, General Public: $8

FLAMENCO TROUPE “LA YEDRA”

Based in Madrid, the Flamenco Troupe La Yedra has had a sweeping success both in Spain and abroad since its formation in the Spring of 2003. As a “cuadro,” or small Flamenco Group, they perform weekly at the Tablao “El Teatrillo” in Alpedrete, Madrid. They have also made continuous appearances at such locales as La Casa de los Jacintos in the center of Madrid. Producing Flamenco Theatrical Works such as “Soñando Flamenco” and “Flamenco en Chiquitito,” they have had the opportunity to present these at Spanish theatres, including the well-known Teatro Madrid. The group’s performances have also served as a cultural welcoming to various international groups arriving at the Barajas Airport in Madrid. A group of 6, La Yedra consists of Song, Dance, Guitar and Percussion.

REBECCA L. THOMAS, “La Rebe,” Flamenco Dancer

Rebecca L. Thomas, a University of Rochester graduate, is a co-founder and dancer in “La Yedra,” performing with the group in Spain. When in the Rochester area, she instructs Flamenco for the University of Rochester’s Program of Movement and Dance, and is a guest artist for Young Audiences of Rochester and at various colleges and Universities in the Upstate New York area.

Sponsored by the University of Rochester Program of Movement and Dance.
