Philosophy of teaching:
As an instructor, it is my intention to facilitate the embodiment of African based movement styles. Dance is an activity that challenges the students to experience themselves in action. I am teaching a dynamic and rhythmic style of dance. Posture and co-ordination in styles identified as African are fundamentals that often appear complicated. I feel that it is my job to simplify the basic body dynamics necessary to execute the movement and then to provide the space for this movement to be danced. Dance produces certain qualities in the dancer. Physical qualities such as strength, grace, and quickness increase, while emotional qualities such as joy and confidence develop in the individual. These states of being naturally arise from participating in an artistic community of students who dance. In this supportive environment, each student can maximize their own potential, expressing both their academic inquiries and their physical prowess.
