Sarah Eisel is enjoying her second season as Assistant Technical Director at the University of Rochester’s International Theatre Program. After spending 8 years in Massachusetts, she is glad to be back in her home state. While in Massachusetts, Sarah was Technical Director at Concord Academy, working on original and bold pieces that included Tectonic Theatre Project’s The Laramie Project, 3SisTerz (an original adaptation), Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie, Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream (done as a Beatles musical), Chekhov’s The Seagull, The Cradle Will Rock, Ubu ’77 (Ubu Roi with all hits from 1977), and Tyger/Tiger, an original work inspired by Tennessee William’s writings and the effects of Hurricane Katrina. She has also freelanced as an electrician and stage manager in many professional theatres in the greater Boston area, including Stoneham Theatre, Huntington, CMAC, The Lyric, and Boston College.
This is more than just a return to her home state as Sarah graduated from the University of Rochester in 1999 with a BA in English Literature, fond memories of the Theatre Program, and enough experience to start her on her career in technical theatre. The University of Rochester’s Theatre Program enabled her to take advantage of opportunities to intern in NYC at La MAMA E.T.C. and at the Lincoln Center Institute, and also to stage manage the Todd Theatre Troupe in NYC for performances of Brecht’s Woyzeck and Joanna Scott’s Speakeasy on the NYCFringe. Enjoying her work in an academic setting at Concord Academy prompted Sarah to continue working in the academic field, and she looks forward to the challenges and satisfaction of working on this year’s season with the production staff and students here at the U of R.
