2012 - 2013 Student Edition

The University's main academic calendar, which lists the dates for the start and end of classes as well as break periods, can be found here.

Registering a PhD Thesis
When registering a PhD thesis during the academic year, 20 full working days are needed between the day a thesis is registered and the day of the defense. The day the thesis is registered is not counted nor is the day of the defense. During the summer, 25 full working days are needed. If you have any questions, call the Arts, Sciences and Engineering Graduate Studies Office at 275-4153.

Fall 2012

Mon. Aug. 13 Last day to submit Master's Programs of Study for October 2012 degree candidates.
Fri. Aug. 17 Last day to hold a PhD defense in summer 2012; last day for final examinations for master’s students expecting an October conferral.

Wed. Aug. 22 MA/MS students receiving terminal degrees in October must be degree complete by this date. Plan A Master’s students must submit 2 final unbound corrected thesis copies in the Graduate Studies Office.
Wed. Aug. 22 Last day to submit (in Dean Kearney’s office) the final corrected abstract and pdf of your PhD dissertation to complete the ProQuest requirement and fulfill degree requirements for an October 2012 degree.
NOTE: If this deadline is not met, student must register and pay the appropriate fee for the fall semester at X time status.
Aug. 23 - 24 ESL Testing for all international students who will TA in fall 2012 or spring 2013.
Aug. 24 - Sept. 7 No PhD defenses may be held during this time period.
Mon. Aug. 27 Orientation for new graduate students: 1:00 pm in Hoyt Auditorium
Tues. Aug. 28 TA Training Session for all new graduate students who will TA during their graduate program:  9:00 am, Interfaith Chapel, Lower Level
Thurs. Aug. 30 First day of classes - fall semester.
Mon. Sept. 3 Labor Day. University is closed. This day cannot be counted as a working day in meeting deadlines
Mon. Sept. 10 First day to hold PhD defense in the fall semester.
NOTE: Thesis and paperwork having been submitted to the Graduate Studies Office by Aug. 9, 2012.
Thurs.. Sept. 13 Deadline for fall Registration.
NOTE: $160 late fee after this date.
Fri. Sept. 14 Fellowship Writing Workshop: 9:00 am.  (Location: TBA)
Fri. Sept. 21 Last day for Plan A or B final examinations - oral, written, essay for October degree conferral. (Aug. 22, 2012 deadline for students not registering for fall.)
Wed. Oct. 3 Non-terminal Plan A students must submit 2 final corrected copies in the Graduate Studies Office.

All documents (exam reports, grade changes, etc.) must be submitted to the Graduate Studies Office by this date (Program of Study deadline was Aug. 13, 2012) to remain on October conferral list.
Thurs. Oct. 11 Drop/Add/Audit Deadline for fall 2012. Withdrawal permitted only if time status is not affected.

Last day to submit department approved Master's Programs of Study for March 2013 degree candidates.

Last day to petition GSO for waiver of audit fees.
Oct. 11 - 12 Board of Trustees Meeting – degrees conferred
Wed. Nov. 7 Last day to submit PhD dissertation and paperwork to Graduate Studies Office for the fall semester.
NOTE: If this deadline is not met, then the defense may not be held until the spring semester.
Nov. 22 - Nov. 23 Thanksgiving Holiday. University is closed. These two days cannot be counted as working days in meeting deadlines.
Dec. 20 - Jan. 2 Due to recess and holidays, no PhD defenses may be held during this time period.
Tues. Dec. 25 The University is closed. This day cannot be counted as a working day in meeting deadlines.
Tues. Jan. 1 The University is closed. This day cannot be counted as a working day in meeting deadlines.
Jan. 3 - 11 PhD defenses may be held during this time period only if the dissertation was accepted in the Graduate Studies Office by the Nov. 7 deadline.
Mon. Jan. 14 MA/MS students receiving terminal degrees in March must be degree complete by this date. Plan A students must submit 2 final corrected thesis copies in Graduate Studies Office.

Last day to submit (in Dean Kearney’s office) the final corrected abstract and pdf of your PhD dissertation to complete the ProQuest requirement and fulfill degree requirements for a March 2013 degree.

Jan. 14 - Jan. 25 No PhD defenses may be held during the first two weeks of the spring semester.
Wed. Jan. 16 First day of classes spring semester.
Mon. Jan. 28 First day to hold PhD defense in the spring semester.
Wed. Jan. 30 Deadline for spring Registration.
NOTE: $160 late fee after this date.

Last day to submit Master's Programs of Study for May 2013 degree candidates.
Wed. Feb. 6 Last day for non-terminal Plan A or B final examinations - oral, written, essay, for March 2013 degree (Jan. 15 deadline for students completeing all degree requirements in the fall semester for a terminal degree).
Mon. Feb. 11 Non-terminal Plan A students must submit 2 final corrected thesis copies in Dean’s Office to remain on the March 2013 conferral list.

All documents (exam reports, grade changes, etc.) must be submitted by this date (Program of Study deadline was October 11, 2012) to remain on March conferral list.
Wed. Feb. 27 Drop/Add/Audit Deadline for spring 2013. Withdrawal permitted only if time status is not affected.

Last day to petition GSO for waiver of audit fees.
Mon. Mar. 11 Last day to submit PhD dissertation and paperwork to Graduate Studies Office for the spring semester.
NOTE: If this deadline is not met, then the defense may not be held until the summer.
Mar. 14 - 15 Board of Trustees Meeting - degrees conferred.
Wed. Apr. 17 Last day to hold PhD defense during the spring semester.

Last day for Plan A or B final examinations - oral, written, essay for May 2013 degree.
Apr. 18 - May 27 Due to end-of-semester deadlines, commencements, and recess, PhD defenses may not be held during this time period.
Tues. Apr. 23 Master's Plan A students must submit 2 final corrected thesis copies in Dean's Office.

All documents (exam reports, grade changes, etc.) must be submitted by this date (Program of Study deadline was Jan. 30, 2013.)

Last day to submit (in Dean Kearney’s office) the final corrected abstract and pdf of your PhD dissertation to complete the ProQuest requirement and fulfill degree requirements for a May 2013 degree.
May 16 - 17 Board of Trustees Meeting – degrees conferred.

Summer 2013

Tues. June 12 Registration deadline for summer term.
Fri. June 28 Last day to register a PhD dissertation in the Graduate Studies Office of Arts, Sciences and Engineering for summer 2013.
NOTE: If this deadline is not met, then the defense may not be held until the fall semester.
Thurs. July 4 4th of July Holiday. The University is closed. This day cannot be counted as a working day in meeting deadlines.
Fri. Aug. 16 Last day to hold PhD defense in summer 2013.

Last day to hold a masters defense for summer 2013.
Thurs. Aug. 22 Last day to submit (in Dean Kearney’s office) the final corrected abstract and pdf of your PhD dissertation to complete the ProQuest requirement and fulfill degree requirements for an October 2012 degree.
Last day to submit 2 corrected unbound copies of the masters dissertation for Oct. 2012 degree. NOTE:  If this deadline is not met, student must register and pay the appropriate fees for the fall semester at X time status.
Aug. 24 - Sept. 13 No defenses may be held during this time period.
