Funding Opportunities
Call for Project Proposals (2008/09) — CLOSED
Deadline: May 30, 2008
The promotion and expansion of Humanistic Studies at the University of Rochester are annually showcased through funds allocated by President Joel Seligman. These funds support the Humanities Project which is currently governed by the Chairs of Departments in the Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences and the Senior Associate Dean of Humanities.
In the interest of fostering conversations across discipline and departmental boundaries, we invite our colleagues to submit proposals for the academic year 2008-2009.
Of particular appeal are projects that employ or showcase innovative research and alternative perspectives — initiatives that would increase our faculty's profile while fortifying intellectual communities. Projects involving or expanding our awareness of research in the areas of Asian Studies, Globalization, and Digital Humanities will receive most attention, but projects unrelated to these rubrics will be considered as well. Small grants may be awarded for curricular initiatives that foster cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
All projects should engage and extend to faculty, graduates, and undergraduates in the various Schools of the University of Rochester and at neighboring institutions as well as the larger community. Successful proposals must include college faculty from two or more disciplines that would be integrally involved in the project. All proposals must originate from faculty in two or more of the College's Humanities or Humanistic Social Sciences departments, although the participation of humanities faculty from other colleges of the University is welcomed. Budget proposals should include all related expenses; departments or programs may choose to supplement funding or find additional outside support. Proposals may originate from graduate students but these require written and ongoing support of a full-time faculty member.
A larger, more singular conference may be developed from selected proposals. The Chairs may request alterations of the proposals to better integrate or clarify; changes may be requested to further unify projects under one umbrella.
The best proposals will be those that have considered some of the following:
- A keynote speaker capable of attracting significant attention in the wider community
- Artists / instructors in residence (writers, actors, studio artists, musicians, etc.)
- Opportunities for informal exchange and social interaction outside of formal structures
- Events connected to the broader curriculum and specific graduate and undergraduate courses in areas that by their nature connect all aspects of the College
- Curricular outreach (on-line readings, cross-listed courses and shared information that remains available)
- Planning that provides inceptive curricular structures that initiate programming likely to continue beyond the funding period
- Faculty exchange programs with local and Corridor institutions
- Co-curricular involvement of graduate or undergraduate students
The deadline for Proposals was May 30, 2008.
