The Central New York Experimental Film Series (CNYX) brings prominent living experimental filmmakers to the campuses of the University of Rochester and Syracuse University for screenings and discussions of their work. CNYX will provide Western New York with regular access to experimental cinema from the recent past and the present. Although the culture of experimental film in the U.S. and abroad is vibrant and diverse, there is a lack of exposure to this type of work in the area. Additionally, the decline in distribution and exhibition of celluloid prints means that audiences have fewer and fewer chances to view cinema produced on film. CNYX features filmmakers whose work originates on celluloid, and screenings will offer audiences the increasingly rare opportunity to view much of this work projected on film. It allows students, faculty, and the broader local community to experience the work of leading artists in avant-garde film production in its intended projection format (rather than via DVD or websites that offer often-low-quality reproductions of these works).
