Business Major

The College offers an undergraduate major in Business that is administered through the Multidisciplinary Studies Center in Dewey Hall.  Students with questions, or who wish to enroll in the program should see the Business advisor in the Multidisciplinary Studies Center. Goals of the major:

  • To build on principles of statistics and economics and other social sciences.
  • To provide students with an understanding of business-related disciplines such as finance, accounting, marketing, operations management and organizational theory.
  • To provide students an analytical approach for addressing current as well as future opportunities and problems in either for-profit or not-for-profit organizations.
  • To prepare students for graduate work that will heighten their preparation in specific disciplines.

Requirements for a Business major:

  • Satisfactory completion of prerequisite in Mathematics (prerequisite Calculus courses are not subject to the College's overlap policy).
  • Core set of nine required courses.
  • Choice of either Track A or Track B; at least three courses from the same Track are required.
  • The upper-level writing requirement is satisfied by taking two courses for W credit.  Any two courses below with a W attached may be used for this requirement (i.e. MKT 203W & ECO 217W). Contact the Business advisor for more information.

Please note:

  • The Business major satisfies the College's Social Sciences Division.
  • Students must meet prerequisites and/or co-requisites for individual courses. Be sure to check the course description/course schedule database for current information about courses and their prerequisites and any restrictions (i.e. not open to freshman).
  • College rules on overlap apply. (No more than three courses may overlap between the twelve courses comprising this major and another major. No more than two courses may overlap between this major and a minor.)
  • Students may not receive credit for both FIN 204 and FIN 205.
  • TRANSFER CREDIT: A maximum of three transfer courses may be used towards the Business major, no more than one of which may apply to the Track. Transfer credit is approved VIA Hillary Brower, please email a syllabus to her prior to coming for walk in hours. The approval process takes about a week if the course has not already been previously approved.
  • STUDY ABROAD: This is a list of previously approved courses that students have taken abroad. Please note that although these courses have been previously transferred, you will need to contact Hillary Brower ( before they can be applied to your major or minor. This is not a comprehensive list; if you find a course abroad that coincides with a course in the business major or minor, please also contact Hillary.

In order to be accepted into the Business major, students must satisfactorily complete a full sequence of Calculus: MTH 141-143, or MTH 161-162, or MTH 171-172, or equivalent.  These courses are not subject to the overlap policy and may therefore be used towards the natural sciences division.
