The Intensive English Program provides two tracks of study. One track is designed for students who wish to improve their general English skills at all levels (CAS 089), and the other is specifically for incoming graduate students who are preparing to teach or give professional presentations (CAS 090).
CAS 089 English as a Second Language: General Skills
This intensive course, which is for people who want to achieve rapid improvement in English, is divided into sections classified by level of competency. In each section, instruction is designed to give the student a greatly improved command of English in all its aspects: pronunciation, fluency in speaking, comprehension of the spoken language, and reading and writing skills.
CAS 090 English as a Second Language: Graduate Skills
This course is open to all current graduate students with advanced English skills. For those who will serve as Teaching Assistants during their graduate years, it explores the linguistic, cultural, and pedagogical components of teaching in an American university. For those in professional programs, areas such as written and oral communication and presentation skills are emphasized. Each student is responsible for several classroom presentations that are videotaped and used to analyze teaching and presentation.
