Henry Carpender is a fourth year undergraduate student of Trombone Performance at the Eastman School of Music. His roots are as a working Chicagoland musician, having performed at notable Chicagoland venues like FitzGerald's, The Hideout, The Jazz Showcase, The Green Mill, The American Music Festival, Pritzker Pavilion, and Ravinia. He is a regular member of local Chicago groups, such as Expo '76, The Sabres, The Wichita Jacks, and The Zimmermen. Henry completed his high school education at Mundelein High School, where he was the first chair trombonist of the Honors Wind Ensemble and Honors Jazz Ensemble. Henry was a member of the ILMEA Jazz program from 2010-2016, and the Concert/Orchestra program from 2013-2016. He was also selected as an ILMEA All-State musician in 2015 and 2016. During his time in the Honors Jazz Ensemble, he was awarded outstanding soloist distinctions at The Rolling Meadows Jazz Festival, The Purdue Jazz Festival, and The Eau Claire Jazz Festival. He was also a recipient of The Louis Armstrong Award. Alongside his high school musical career, Henry also was a member of The Merit Conservatory and The Midwest Young Artists Conservatory, as a member of both organizations top Big Bands. Henry has studied with musicians Chris Madsen, Bob Lark, Mark Colby, Eric Hochberg, and trombonists Elliot Chasanov, Tim Riordan, and privately with Colleen Bayoneto and Mark Kellogg (current). Besides Henry's career as a performer, he was also a private instructor from 2015-2016. When he isn't playing or teaching, Henry enjoys traveling, political activism, and cooking.
