Event Description

Christopher Hotaling is currently in the second year of the DMA program at the Eastman School of Music where he studies Euphonium Performance and Literature with Professor Mark Kellogg. Chris earned his bachelor’s degrees in euphonium performance and music education from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, where he studied euphonium with Dr. Charles Guy and voice with Dr. Lonel Woods. At Potsdam, Chris was chosen as a Presser Scholar in 2015 and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2016; he then went on to earn his master’s degree in performance from Eastman. At Eastman, Chris’s responsibilities include serving as studio assistant for Professor Mark Kellogg’s euphonium studio and teaching secondary lessons to undergraduate students from the University of Rochester. Chris has appeared in masterclasses with artists such as Steven Mead, Sam Pilafian, Adam Frey, and Demondrae Thurman, and has played with professional ensembles such as the Northern Symphonic Winds, the Orchestra of Northern New York, and the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra. In spring of 2017, he competed in the North-East Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference (NERTEC) mock band and solo artist competition finals, placing 2nd in the solo artist competition. This coming March, Chris will return to NERTEC both as a competitor and as a lecturer when he gives a presentation on the pedagogical benefits of playing vocal repertoire on low brass instruments. Chris is currently co-director of Tuba Mirum, for which his responsibilities include programming and conducting, and as of fall 2018, he also serves as adjunct faculty at St. John Fisher College, where he teaches classes in music appreciation and music history.
