Michael C. Matthews comes from Greenville, South Carolina and is a senior at the Eastman School of Music where he studies with Dr. Chien-Kwan Lin. Michael’s former teachers include Drs. Matt Olson and Kyra Zhang. He enjoys performing for the Eastman and Rochester communities with the Eastman Saxophone Project, OSSIA New Music Ensemble, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble. Michael is privileged to be the baritone chair of Scio Quartet, a chamber ensemble formed with studio colleagues Siobhan Plouffe, Uday Singh, and Clancy Ellis. Scio performs frequently throughout Rochester and was the national winner in the 2019 MTNA Young Artist Chamber Competition, and won top prize at the 198th Army Band’s Solo & Ensemble Competition in 2017 and 2019. As the winner of the Nico Toscano Concerto Competition, Michael performed the Glazunov Concerto with the Cordancia Chamber Orchestra in 2019. Over the summers, Michael spent his time at the Brevard Music Festival, Frederick L. Hemke Saxophone Institute, and American Saxophone Academy. Michael also enjoys collaborations with composers, and has premiered chamber pieces by Aaron Siebert, Patrick Andrew Thompson, Matthew Schultheis, Baljinder Sekhon, Sean Calhoun, and Andrew Kosinski.
