Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Derek has been studying the bassoon since the age of 11. Growing up, he performed as principal bassoon in the Texas All-State Philharmonic Orchestra, and spent three years in the Houston Youth Symphony, where he appeared on Houston Public Media's Classical Classroom radio show alongside Dr. Michael Webster.

Derek is about to obtain his undergraduate degree in bassoon performance from the Eastman School of Music. Here, he studied under George Sakakeeny, and gained an interest in conducting which he also studied for two years. During his time at Eastman, he performed on bassoon and contrabassoon with the Eastman Wind Ensemble and Philharmonia, and served as principal bassoon in their 2019 performance of Shostakovich's 5th Symphony. His solo repertoire is varied, ranging from modern bassoon standards to a number of Bach cello suites.

Always eager to play with and learn from new musicians, he has attended the Round Top Music Festival and participated in master classes with Richard Beene, Matthew McDonald, Drew Pattison, and Kristin Wolfe Jensen. Following his graduation from Eastman, Derek will pursue a graduate degree in order to continue his musical studies.
