“Classical Music on
the Spot” Participants Demonstration
Classical music is usually performed exactly as written in the score. But historical documents show that eighteenth-century musicians often improvised in live performance. Fortunately, they have left behind some traces that give us paths into reconstructing this tradition. Five students and two instructors will present live keyboard improvisations in the eighteenth-century style. During an intensive workshop at the Eastman School of Music, the participants have explored historical models, period treatises, classical era repertoire, and modern-day scholarship. The result is an informed and exciting revival of the Classical tradition of improvisation.
