Tuesday, March 3, 2009 Kilbourn Hall • 8 p.m. Maskanda Guitar of South Africa: Shiyani NgcoboShiyani Ngcobo is an acknowledged master of maskanda, a musical style with deep Zulu roots. Little heard outside of South Africa, maskanda is dance music with nimble, unstoppable grooves. It was created in the early 20th century by Zulu workers migrating between rural homes and jobs in cities. Mr. Ngcobo plays either guitar or igogo — guitar made by hand from an oil can, wood, and wire — and presents his music with a five-member ensemble (concertina, hand drum, electric bass, two background vocalists/ dancers). |
