Mac OS 10.3.5 has resolved many of the issues in earlier releases of OS 10, and is now fully supported by ITS. Some people may still run into a problem now and then. If you do, please call your desktop services provider for assistance. You can also send email to the IT Center at ITSCenter@rochester.edu for more information..

Panther Mac OS 10.3 Upgrade recommendations and known software issues:

OS 10.3 Upgrade recommendations:

Here is a highly recommended way to install Panther, to guard against many problems that could occur.

1. Before installing Panther, check your startup drive for damage, and repair it if necessary. The easiest way to do this is to boot from the OS X Install CD and run Disk Utility (from the Installer menu). Click the First Aid tab, select your hard drive in the drive/volume list, and click "Repair Disk." (If you know how, you can instead start your Mac in single-user mode and use fsck, as this runs the same repair routines.) If you have a third-party disk utility such as Alsoft's DiskWarrior, you can also run that for good measure.

2. Before installing Panther, boot from your hard drive again and repair permissions on your boot volume. To do this, launch Disk Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities), click the First Aid tab, select your hard drive in the drive/volume list, and then click "Repair Disk Permissions." (It's important that you do this while booted from your hard drive , rather than from the OS X install CD or another volume, in order to perform the "correct" repairs.)

3. Install Panther. (See the tip below, "More info for Panther upgraders," for more information about installation options.)

4. After installing Panther and then booting from your hard drive (you should now be starting up into Panther!), again repair permissions via Disk Utility as described in Step 2. This will ensure that any system-level permissions that may have been corrupted or changed incorrectly -- installers are notorious for this -- are reset to the correct values.

Wake from Sleep Issue:

Sometimes when sleep is activated, the hard drive will appear to spin down and the monitor will go dim, but the fans will stay on, indicating that the processor(s) is still functioning. When the user attempts to re-awaken his or her system, the monitor will remain dim. This problem is not consistent, and is not repeatable every time by most users experiencing it. Software updates will correct this issue.

Firewire Drive Issues:

The 10.3.1 update delivers enchanced functionality and improved reliability for the following applications, services and technologies: FileVault, Printing, WebDav, and FireWire 800 drives. This update also includes the latest Security Updates.

Apple has identified an issue with external FireWire hard drives using the Oxford 922 bridge chip-set with firmware version 1.02 that can result in the loss of data stored on the disk drive. Even with the improvements available in this update, Apple recommends that you update the firmware on your FireWire drive. Please contact your drive manufacturer for more information.

Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 9.0.x

Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect works in Mac OS X 10.3 to protect your computer from viruses. You may also scan disks with Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh in Mac OS X 10.3. When "fast user switching" is enabled, Norton AntiVirus alerts appear only for the user that first logged in. If another user is active when the alert occurs, the alert does not appear for that user.

There is a problem with enabling journaling in Disk Utility with Auto-Protect active.

Eudora e-mail client

There have been a few problems with Eudora 6 and Panther. The most common problem is the spinning wheel of death every few minutes and freezes. Upgrade to 6.2.

Filemaker DataBase Management tool

FileMaker products have been fully tested as being compatible with Apple's new Panther (Mac OS X 10.3) operating system, however there are a few known issues. Click on the link for full details.
