(Updated on: November 5, 2009)

Important message about Windows 7: Microsoft released Windows 7, its newest version of Windows, on October 22, 2009. University IT is currently testing applications frequently used at the University for compatibility with Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit versions). Until that preliminary testing is complete, University IT does not recommend installing Windows 7 on University IT hardware.

University IT has completed the current phase of Windows Vista testing. At this time, we do not recommend and will not be supporting the Vista operating system. We recommend that you remain on Windows XP, and upgrade to Service Pack 3 if you are not on that version already. A new Windows operating system version, currently referred to as Windows 7, is currently in beta testing. While Microsoft has not announced an official release date yet, it is expected to be released sometime in 2009.

These recommendations are for those departments supported by University IT. Other local IT service providers may have different advice. Please contact your local IT support provider if you have any questions about this recommendation.

NOTE: The IT Center and ResNet *do* provide support for Vista on student computers.

A number of applications do not work under Vista. Please click here for details.

Windows Vista and Office 2007 FAQs

  • Q: When will Windows Vista be available?

  • A: Licensing for Departments (Non-Campus Agreement)
Departmental licensing for Windows Vista (Upgrade) is now available at IT Computer Sales. If you recently purchased a Windows license you may be eligible to upgrade to Windows Vista Business Edition by only purchasing installation media. This can be verified by contacting IT Computer Sales with your requisition number or by checking your invoice for the "SELECT Windows Vista Business" description. Licensing for the Enterprise and Ultimate editions is available with 3 year software assurance purchase. The Ultimate edition requires an installation media purchase for each license purchased. It is highly recommended that departments consult with their desktop support staff prior to installation.

  • Q: If I order a new computer/laptop after the Windows Vista release date, can I get Windows XP instead?

  • A: Yes. It is estimated that Windows XP will be available as an OEM installation (Installation by manufacturer) for about a year after the Windows Vista launch. After this time, departments can purchase licenses from IT Computer Sales that will allow them to downgrade Windows Vista to Window XP.
