Web Technical Assistant - Position Summary:
Full Time University of Rochester Students Only
Web Technical Assistants support and execute Web development in line with the University Web policies as described in: http://www.rochester.edu/manual/ . For a full description of what University Web Services does see http://www.rochester.edu/ITS/web/ .
Successful applicants will become part of the University Web Services team, a group of highly capable experienced undergraduate and graduate students supporting the primary university servers and selected other servers and a user community of over 600 information providers (Web Publishers). Graduates from our group can, and do go on to become well paid Webmasters.
You must have strong interpersonal skills for user support and team participation. The interpersonal skills are considered a core skill in that you will be interacting with our customers as a developer, trainer and troubleshooter. You must be comfortable teaching both peers and older faculty/staff. You must be unbiased regarding workstation and software. You must be a team player and able to participate in the give and take of a real world development environment with budget and time constraints. You must be able to take and give direction. Rebels need not apply.
Technical Skill Requirements: A mix of the following skills are accepted. You do not need all of these to qualify. The more you have the better you will be viewed. This hiring cycle we are most interested in the PHP/MySQL skills as this is a hot area of development.
1.HTML advanced skills. HTML coding via a text editor and a Web editor such as Dreamweaver. Hand coding is considered invaluable for debugging and quick fixes.
2. HTML debugging experience
3. Cascading Style Sheets
4. Awareness of Web Standards
5. UNIX user skills including SSH, file management, permissions and UNIX editors. Our servers are the Sun Solaris version of UNIX,
6. Secure FTP in its various flavors.
7. Programming skills in Perl, Java, Javascript, PHP
8. Teaching skills - you will teach new users how to get started in one on one sessions as well as specific task skills in short briefings to more experienced users.
9. Database experience. MySQL, and Filemaker
10. Mac and PC desktop support experience.
11. Graphics software experience. Such as: PhotoShop, Illustrator, Flash, and FireWorks,
12. Design and layout experience including color management
13. Webcasting, video shooting, capture, editing and conversion for streaming.
14. Photography: Shooting with an electronic camera for Web use such as head shots, scenes and VR composites.
15. Familiarity with content management systems.
Training will be supplied for minor deficiencies and to develop new skills.
As an applicant you are required to supply a resume and URL's of sites you have developed or maintain. This should be your best work and demonstrate the skills above. You will be ask to explain the why or why not of using various technical solutions. You may be asked to analyze a web site for how it was done and quality of the execution.

Other Requirements:
Applicant must be a full time student at the University in good standing as a student and with ITS and other computer support groups on campus. ITS student employees are preferred. Applicants are NOT restricted to computer science majors. We have TAs from computer science, music theory and economics to pre-med.
