Passwords
As part of the migration passwords will expire and new passwords will
be held to higher security standards.
Many Web publishers have not changed their password since they were
first set up on line. Others have very weak passwords that make them
vulnerable to password cracking. We have until now not forced passwords
changes. Because of increasing security concerns regarding hackers breaking
into our system we must insist on stronger passwords.
Passwords will expire on first login to the new system. This means you
can not work on the new Web server until you reset your password. Additionally,
you will be required to change your password every four months.
What is a strong password?
Not a word in ANY dictionary
Has three of the following
Uppercase letters
Lowercase letters
Punctuation (any on your keyboard)
Numbers
Does not repeat characters more than twice
Is not the same as your last password
How does one change a
password?
You must use a SSH (Secure SHell) program to logon to the development
Web server "www.wdev.rochester.edu". SSH makes a secure encrypted
connection to the server thus insuring that no one will be able to capture
your password and use it to break in to the Web server.
There is information about SSH specific to your computers operating
system at the following ITS Web sites:
Windows and UNIX
Windows
and Macs
Note: Recent operating systems such as OS X come with SSH built in.
