Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance

Implementing LIFT Text Transcoder (available December 2005)

Developers of University Web sites should be sensitive to the needs of disabled persons and must make every effort to be in compliance with the ADA. Issues that should be addressed include, but are not limited to:

considering how a blind person's screen reader will read the pages in a given site
considering how a colorblind person will view the site's graphics, background colors, context, etc.
making sure that any meaningful content that is conveyed in graphics is also presented in an alternative form (e.g., alt text for images, longdesc tags for tables and charts that are saved as images)
creating site navigation that works for individuals who can't use a mouse (e.g., keyboard shortcuts, tab order)

Site authors who work with an off-campus vendor to build or administer their sites are responsible for insuring that the vendor adheres to ADA guidelines. ADA compliance must be part of any contract for Web services.
