It has been brought to our attention that reviewers will be assessing whether materials or procedures proposed are potentially hazardous to research personnel and/or the environment, and if needed, determine whether adequate protection is proposed. 

This information has been included in the Parent R01 (PA-10-067) announcement under “Additional Review Criteria”, page 14.  No information has been provided in the instructions as to what specifics need to be addressed or where this information should be included in the R01 proposal.  At this time if biohazards are planned to be used as part of a project, it is recommended that any potential hazard of their use be addressed and protections against such hazard be proposed.  This information could be included under “Other Attachments” or elsewhere in the proposal where it is deemed appropriate.
