General guidelines and advice

General Comment

The next several cycles of regular NIH submissions (regular R01s, R21s) may be less competitive than in the recent past because (i) many PIs are likely to be responding to stimulus opportunities and (ii) many currently pending applications will be “sucked out” of the system as they are funded using ARRA monies. Thus, there may be a favorable “window” for regular grant applications over the next 1-2 grant cycles.

Important General Advice on Supplements:

Supplement initiatives vary considerably between different NIH Institutes & Centers (ICs). It is strongly suggested that you contact your Program Officer (PO) by email or phone & discuss your plans in advance of submission. For those faculty whose PO is not responsive/accessible, it is suggested that you contact the Director of the Institute for guidance. Questions of a general nature may also be directed to your ORPA RA.
