Listed below are selected admissions policy highlights. For
information on specific policies not listed here, contact
the Office of Admissions.
Transfer and Retroactive Credit
Transfer credit pertains to coursework from an institution
other than the Warner School, including courses completed
at another school within the University of Rochester. Retroactive
credit pertains to coursework completed at the Warner School
prior to matriculation into a degree program. With the approval
of the student’s advisor, the program chair, and the
associate dean of Graduate Studies, transfer and/or retroactive
credit may be granted as appropriate. Transfer credit may
be granted only for relevant courses, completed with a B-
or better and for no more than 10 hours for master’s
programs, 30 hours for Ph.D. programs and 36 hours for Ed.D.
programs. In addition, coursework must have been completed
within five years prior to the date of matriculation, in the
case of Master’s students, and ten years, in the case
of doctoral students, although some exceptions may be granted
to this policy.
Students may begin studies before applying for matriculation
into a program. Both transfer and retroactive credit is negotiated
after admission and during the planning of the program of
study. It is advised that students take no more than nine
credits before matriculating to minimize the risk that such
coursework may not count toward their chosen program.
Deferral
Admitted students may defer up to one year from the original
intended enrollment term. Deferring students waive any financial
award offered by Warner.
Reapplication
In general, Warner does not accept applications to a Warner
program from persons whose admission to that same program
was previously declined. However, an applicant who can provide
significant new evidence of achievement since his/her original
application may be allowed to reapply to the same program.
Applicants should write a letter of intent to reapply, citing
such evidence, to the director of Admissions who, in consultation
with the program faculty, will notify the applicant if the
School will accept a subsequent application. Anyone whose
application was declined may apply to a different program
without prejudice, but is required to disclose the original
application on the application form.
